Re: Highway80
Hello Don,
Have some stuff at home that you will probably like. Might, (strong
emphasis on might, which means a weak chance of ever doing it) one day
write a book on the history of Dixie Overland Highway. (I have done
several books in the past.) I am more interested in showing what sites
today exist that would interest RV'ers traveling across America. One of
my passions is traveling the back roads when going somewhere.
I have a complete list of all incorporated towns in Louisiana, and the
parishes that the route goes through.
For me personally, I work on Hwy 80, live on Hwy 80, and my father
grew up on Hwy 80 and my mother one block from it. My father and mother
traveled lots of Highway 80 while in the Marine Corps from Beaufort SC to
Twenty Palms Springs California back in the early 1950's.
The history of Dixie Overland Highway and US80 can be so inclusive
it's not funny. In our area alone, it was one block from the Louisiana
Hayride (copyrighted name), it was the infamous Bossier Strip. (The Al
Ida Motel that Elvis stayed in is still on Hwy 80. aka, Texas Street in
Bossier City) These a but a few of the local infamous things about Hwy
80. Dave Wall, head of the local Bandido's was killed on Hwy 80 at one of
the bars on the Bossier Strip. His funeral was attended by nationwide
members of the Bandidos and attracted a lot of attention. (most attendees
came in cars.)
Of course Bonnie and Clyde were killed on Hwy 80 between Arcadia and
Gibsland and both towns maintain a small museum to the fact and fight
over which has actual claim to fame. (This would be Bienville Parish.)
In Webster Parish Louisana, there is about a mile stretch of the old
road bed that is currently blocked off. The old bridge that went over
Dorcheat Bayou in Webster is still standing but not in use and sits
artfully next to an "all you can eat catfish/seafood" place.
In Bossier Parish there is an actual bridge left from the Dixie
Overland Road bed of 1915-1926. Isn't much to look at, but still there.
Looks more like a driveway than a bridge. The rest of the roadbed is dirt
and not used anymore.
Wasted enough of your time.
The website below gives an excellent overview of the highway and talks
about some other infamous things, such as the death of Bonnie and Clyde.
